Make More Money With A Memorable Memory Hook

Elevate is a networking community organized to help our members make more money through structured collaboration and referrals.

Recently, we asked the question of whether there is gold in the Elevate mine for us.

And then we discussed that our 85 members are directly connected to about 5,000 people if we count their friends, families, clients, facebook followers, linkedin contacts, etc.

That means everyone in the chapter can get a direct introduction to about 500,000 people that are one level removed from our members and that there are dozens of people that need our services today.

Now that we know that there is gold in our mine and we’ve mastered our 30 second commercial, the next thing we need to think about is our tagline.

And having a good tagline is more critical than you know.

Why?

There are 85 members and hundreds of visitors, and quite often the only thing someone might remember about you is your tagline.

So let’s take a look at our former member, Amy Joelle.

She is the best physicist in the world selling the best nuclear reactor in the world and her tagline was “just do it!”

And while Nike made billions of dollars with that tagline, Amy Joelle didn’t get any referrals because her tagline was too generic for Elevate’s purposes, and did not describe what she does.

And quite frankly if a tagline could apply to anyone, it will be remembered by no one.

So how do you create an appropriate tagline for Elevate’s purposes?

First off, an Elevate tagline works great for referrals and networking purposes, but not necessarily for your other marketing tactics.

It’s a memory hook.

A good formula for a great Elevate tagline is to tell me what you do and then tell me the benefit of what you do.

Take my tagline for example:

We build websites (that’s what we do).

That build businesses (the benefit we deliver via more engaging website that drives sales leads).

So how did I come up with this?

After trying 30 different taglines when I joined Elevate a decade ago, I opened up an Excel sheet and created two columns.

In the first column, I brainstormed everything that I did.

In the second column, I brainstormed all the benefits that I delivered.

Then I started mixing and matching Column 1 with Column 2 until I settled upon my current tagline.

So use this tagline exercise to make a better tagline, and I guarantee that you will not only be more memorable, you’ll get more referrals and make more money.
