Survivor: Millennials vs. Gen X

Tonight, before the presidential debate, it’s Survivor: Millennials vs. Gen X . competitive reality TV featuring two tribes divided by generation: Millennials born between 1984 and 1997) and Generation X ( born between 1963 and 1982).[1]

We don’t need a show of hands but look around the room and you’ll see our chapter has a good mix of Millenials…Generation X…and Baby boomers!

There are 86 million Millennial-Americans ..they our co-workers and often -unique for our time- our bosses.

Our career change coach- Jill Ozovek (number 41 on the roster)–works with Millenials…95 % of her clients are in this age group so she’s an expert on how Millennials think and act.

Jill says, ” when I ask what they want, the vast majority say a collaborative team environment where they can have impact and really learn from a mentor or a team dynamic”.

Millienials are the same as every other generation when it comes to praise, giving and receiving appreciation, fair play, equal opportunity. If you have these same characteristics, be yourself.

Jill advises her millennial clients to lean on friends and colleagues….to ask questions and be curious…and for the rest of us she advises that “Remember, they are people , too

I know that sounds obvious, but it’s true. They are going home to be moms, dads, daughters, sons, girlfriends, boyfriends, pet owners -often home a ton of debt and genuine optimism.

Finally,(my fellow baby boomers) Be authentic. Millennials don’t care about age; they care about whether the people they work with are real. Remember, they fell in love with Bernie Sanders, age 74-
