Give It Away

Last night was the eighth and final night of Hannukah, we’re five days from Christmas, and eleven from the New Year. The cold weather may have come late but it got here.

The music that began at 12:01am the day after Thanksgiving tells us, it’s the season. To reflect, to plan, and to give. It’s a weird time for a lot of people – running around to a ton of events, some are reminded of lost loved ones. Some spend time being around wacky family members, and some are perhaps feeling not quite connected enough. There’s joy and sadness, snow in New York, sunshine in vacation areas. Kids are off from school. Some industries shut down, while others are cranking.

Happy Holidays!

But here’s the thing, no matter where you’ve been, no matter how the year has gone, what you have planned, or where you find yourself today, right here in this very moment, there’s an incredible opportunity to create.

Today I invite you to be present to the idea that when we give more than we get, we end up getting more than we give. I’m not talking about doing the automatic thing that you’re SUPPOSED to do. I’m talking about making a choice to show up in service of others.

We all possess incredible gifts – knowledge, experience, money, skills, time, joy, loving hearts, energy, brilliance, a physical body that can speak, listen, hug, kiss, give a high five.

It doesn’t matter what the form is. What matters is that you can give it away!

And I invite you to consider that in order to “keep it,” that’s exactly what you have to do. You want love, you better give love. You want respect, you better give that too. Kindness, patience, compassion? Check check check.

Oh, and you better give those to yourself too!

Here’s a little phrase you may have heard… “Givers gain!”

You’re damn straight we do. Because when we give more than we get, when we prime the pump, there’s no way we don’t receive. Not because of quid pro quo. Because it creates a cyclical force that is guaranteed to come around and provide.

So today, I invite you to take a look around your life and your business. Where can you give? Who needs you? Give something to your clients, your customers, your spouse, your friends, your family, your prospects, your team, your boss or employees. Yourself!

Just give! It feels good in the moment, and planting seeds leads to growth, so though the immediate rewards are there for sure, watching something take hold and grow is where the real rewards can be found.

Give it away, and discover a potent power of creation, wealth, joy.

Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, the Czech author of the book Flow writes, “Happiness is the one thing we do for it’s own sake. Everything else is done with the intention of generating happiness.”

So give it away, and discover how the benefits return right back to you.

Sending love and good wishes to all of you and yours. Here’s to a Belated Happy Hannukah, a Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and a warm, safe, and Happy New Year!
