Elevate is a networking community organized to help our members make more money through structured collaboration and referrals.
And today I want to talk about whether we’re focusing on the most important things and whether we’re solving the right problems.
So the other day, I went to play tennis inside a large tennis bubble.
And while the lights above my court were on, the rest of the lights in the bubble were off, and it was pretty dark in there, almost unplayable because the bubble was designed to have all of its lights on to be at the appropriate brightness for playing.
So I went to the manager and asked him to turn the lights.
And he told me that the owner instructed him to keep the lights off to save electricity costs under the threat of being fired.
But the lights are modern LEDs that only cost pennies per hour to operate.
And that got me to thinking that the problem isn’t the cost of electricity.
The real problem is that their sales and marketing sucks and that’s demonstrated by the fact that 11 of their 12 courts weren’t rented for that hour.
So the owner was focused on saving pennies on electricity, instead making thousands per day by working on the club’s sales and marketing.
And then the manager refused to turn the lights on so I canceled my reservation.
That means they saved $1 on electricity that hour, but lost $100 on the court rental.
So how does this apply to us at Elevate?
Sales, marketing and networking are the most important things we do in business, more important than the profession you practice, and yet we don’t give these tasks the proper attention.
Think about it.
If you’re the best lawyer in the world but have no clients, you just have a hobby.
So make sure you’re looking at the challenges in front of you and make sure you are solving the right problems while focusing on your networking and marketing at Elevate and I guarantee that you’ll get a lot more referrals and … make a lot more money.
