Make More Money Understanding The Journey Is The Destination

Updated February 5, 2025

NYC Elevate is a networking community organized to help our members make more money through structured collaboration and referrals.

This week’s make more money moment is about having the proper long term perspective.

For those of you that have known me for a while, then you know that every other year I take a cross country train trip from New York to San Francisco.

Invariably every time I take this trip I’m inundated with comments about how there are quicker ways to get there like I haven’t heard of the invention of the airplane.

And that made me think that many people might be confused between a journey and getting to a destination, and how that might relate to us here at Elevate.

When I joined Elevate almost 15 years ago, I came to this room with zero clients and zero revenue having recently just started my business.

And I really needed to make money quickly as the bills were piling up.

And if you told me that my destination was a million dollars per year in referred business but that destination was all the way across the country, I would have asked where can I book my flight and how soon can I go.

But the trouble is that the million dollar referral destination is only served by taking a long train ride; by meeting people along the way and building long term relationships with them.

In short, there are no shortcuts to being successful here at Elevate.

And if you get off the train too soon then you’ll never get to that destination of a million dollars.

The key idea here is to get on the train and stay on the train until you actually reach the destination.

But how do we know that we’re on the right train, going in the right direction?

We only have to examine a definitive data point by looking at Elevate’s collective odometer which logs over $1M per month and $120M since we started this journey.

So the sooner you understand that our collective journey is the destination, the more you’ll enjoy the trip, and at that point I guarantee that you’ll make more money.
